The story begins with the Indigenous peoples of Australia, who recognized and utilized the Leptospermum tree, known locally as “Jellybush” or “Tea Tree,” for its medicinal properties long before European settlers arrived. They used the leaves for tea to treat ailments and the bark for its antiseptic properties. However, it wasn’t until European colonization and the introduction of European honeybees in the 1820s that the potential for producing honey from these native trees was realized.

Beekeeping in Australia evolved from a hobbyist activity to a significant commercial industry in the early 20th century. Australian beekeepers began to notice the unique properties of the honey produced from the Leptospermum species, particularly its thick consistency and distinctive flavor. However, the medicinal qualities of manuka honey were not widely recognized until much later.

The turning point for Australian manuka honey came in the late 20th century, following the pioneering research by New Zealand scientists in the 1980s, which identified the unique antibacterial properties of manuka honey, attributed to the presence of methylglyoxal (MGO).
